Memorial Diamonds and Natural Burials in Switzerland

Transform part of your loved one's ashes into a LONITÉ memorial diamond. The rest can be gently laid in a place of your choice, through a personalised natural burial or ashes scattering ceremony. Together with Schweizer Naturbestattung, we help families honour both wishes. LONITÉ creates a personal memorial diamond from a portion of the ashes. Our partner offers thoughtful guidance and arranges a natural burial shaped around the family’s wishes.

A Diamond to Keep, A Peaceful Return to Nature

Only a small portion of your loved one's ashes is needed to create a LONITÉ memorial diamond. The remaining ashes are securely preserved during the creation process and, at your request, can be returned to you or entrusted to a specialised Swiss natural burial. This allows you to honour their memory in two meaningful ways: through a unique diamond that stays close to your family, and through the scattering of their ashes in the Swiss landscape.

FAQs

About Natural Burial & Ashes Scattering in Switzerland

Yes. Cremation ashes may generally be scattered or laid to rest in selected natural settings in Switzerland. The chosen arrangement must respect applicable cantonal and local rules, environmental protections, land ownership and the rights of other people using the area.

LONITÉ coordinates the natural burial with its specialised Swiss partner, who reviews the proposed location before confirming the farewell. Depending on suitability and availability, options may include mountain meadows, forests, trees, rocks, lakes, rivers, mountain streams and other Alpine settings. Private-land consent is required when applicable.

Can ashes be scattered in Switzerland?

Yes, ashes scattering is permitted in Switzerland, but it is not automatically allowed at every location or under every circumstance. Forestry, water-protection, aviation, construction and environmental rules may apply, together with local or cantonal requirements.

Ashes should be scattered discreetly without disturbing other people or leaving materials behind. Ground burial may require the landowner’s consent, while water and aerial arrangements have their own practical requirements. LONITÉ’s Swiss natural-burial partner checks the selected setting and coordinates the service accordingly.

Is ashes scattering legal in Switzerland?

Yes. A portion of the ashes can be used to create a LONITÉ memorial diamond, while the remaining ashes are returned to nature through a Swiss natural burial.

LONITÉ processes the material needed to extract and purify the carbon for the diamond. The remaining ashes entrusted to us can be:

  • Preserved securely during production as a backup

  • Returned to the family upon request

  • Transferred through an identified process to our Swiss natural-burial partner

This creates two complementary tributes: a genuine memorial diamond to keep close and a meaningful natural resting place in Switzerland.

Can part of the ashes become a diamond and the rest be scattered?

LONITÉ currently requests at least 150 g, or approximately 5 oz, of cremation ashes to create a memorial diamond. Alternatively, families may provide 200 g of larger cremated-bone fragments or 5 g of hair.

The requested quantity remains the same regardless of the diamond size because the carbon content of cremation ashes varies and the purification process requires sufficient starting material. These amounts may be enough for up to three memorial diamonds, depending on the sizes ordered. LONITÉ can discuss alternative carbon-source combinations when the available ashes are limited.

How much ash is needed to create a memorial diamond?

The ashes not required for the LONITÉ memorial diamond remain respectfully identified and securely handled. During production, additional material may be retained as a backup because the amount of recoverable carbon differs between individuals.

Once it is clear that the remaining ashes are not needed for diamond creation, the family may request that they be:

  • Returned to the nominated recipient

  • Entrusted to LONITÉ’s Swiss partner for a natural burial

  • Managed according to another arrangement confirmed in the order

Your preference should be recorded before the ashes are transferred or the farewell is planned.

What happens to the ashes not used for the diamond?

Cremation ashes may be returned to nature in a range of suitable Swiss landscapes. Through LONITÉ and its natural-burial partner, possible settings may include:

  • Mountain meadows

  • Forest, tree or rock locations

  • Lakes and rivers

  • Mountain streams and waterfalls

  • Wind or aerial farewell settings

  • Selected high-Alpine environments

Availability depends on the precise location, season, weather, accessibility and applicable requirements. The partner first reviews the family’s wishes and then proposes an appropriate setting rather than promising that ashes can be scattered at any requested public or private place.

Where can cremation ashes be scattered in Switzerland?

Yes. A natural burial or ashes-scattering farewell may be arranged in selected locations in the Swiss Alps. Options can include mountain meadows, forested Alpine areas, natural rocks and other approved settings.

For example, a mountain-meadow burial may place the ashes beneath the turf in a quiet Alpine landscape. Family members can participate in selected arrangements together with the natural-burial team. Because Alpine locations vary in ownership, accessibility, weather exposure and environmental sensitivity, LONITÉ’s partner confirms the exact site and ceremony details individually.

Can ashes be scattered in the Swiss Alps?

Yes, a lake, river or other water-based farewell may be possible in Switzerland when the relevant water-protection and local requirements are met. The arrangement must be appropriate for the specific body of water and should not disturb the public or harm the environment.

When an urn is placed in water rather than only the ashes being scattered, it must be made from a suitable material that dissolves rapidly. LONITÉ’s natural-burial partner reviews the proposed water setting and confirms what type of ceremony can be conducted there.

Can ashes be scattered in a lake or river in Switzerland?

Yes. Family members may attend selected LONITÉ natural-burial ceremonies in Switzerland. The attended packages currently accommodate up to 15 family members and include personal support at the location.

Depending on the chosen package and individual quotation, the family may participate through:

  • Spoken memories or a formal ceremony

  • Flowers and music

  • Religious, spiritual or cultural elements

  • A celebrant or funeral speaker

  • A meal or gathering afterward

Attendance, accessibility and ceremony details are discussed before the location is confirmed so that the farewell can be planned safely and respectfully.

Can family members attend the natural burial?

Yes. LONITÉ can arrange for the natural burial to be carried out on the family’s behalf when they cannot or prefer not to travel to Switzerland.

The unattended Mountain Meadow Farewell Package includes:

  • A 0.25 ct yellow LONITÉ memorial diamond

  • A natural burial in a selected mountain meadow

  • Photographic documentation

  • GPS coordinates of the resting place

The specialist Swiss team conducts the farewell respectfully and provides the agreed documentation afterward. Additional video, personal messages, flowers or other elements may be requested and included in the personalised quotation.

Can the farewell be carried out without the family attending?

At LONITÉ, stand alone ashes scattering service in Switzerland starting from CHF 600. LONITÉ’s combined memorial diamond and natural-burial packages currently start from CHF 3,200. Each featured package includes a 0.25 ct yellow memorial diamond valued at CHF 2,200.

Indicative package prices are:

  • Mountain Meadow Farewell: from CHF 3,200

  • Personal Ceremony Meadow Farewell: from CHF 3,700

  • Tree or Rock Memorial: from CHF 5,200

The final cost depends on attendance, location, ceremony format, transport, accommodation, photography and other personal requests. A standalone Swiss natural burial without a memorial diamond is also available, but every service requires an individual quotation.

How much does ashes scattering in Switzerland cost?

Every featured LONITÉ package combines a memorial diamond with a coordinated Swiss natural burial. All three packages include a 0.25 ct yellow memorial diamond made from the loved one’s ashes and valued at CHF 2,200.

Depending on the package, the service may also include:

  • A mountain-meadow, tree or rock burial

  • Family attendance for up to 15 people

  • Personal on-site support

  • A customised farewell ceremony

  • Photographic documentation

  • GPS coordinates

  • A memorial plaque where permitted

Flowers, music, a celebrant, video, transportation, accommodation and hospitality can be added through a personalised quotation.

What is included in a memorial diamond and natural-burial package?

Yes, photographs and GPS coordinates are included in selected LONITÉ natural-burial packages. The unattended Mountain Meadow Farewell Package includes photographic documentation and the coordinates of the resting place so that the family receives a clear record even when they cannot attend.

For attended or more customised ceremonies, documentation can be adapted to the family’s wishes and may include:

  • Professional photographs

  • Video recording

  • Live streaming

  • GPS coordinates

  • Images of the landscape and ceremony details

The exact documentation should be confirmed in the personalised proposal before the farewell. The partner’s mountain-meadow service also states that burial photographs are included.

Will we receive photographs or GPS coordinates?

Yes. International families may arrange a natural burial in Switzerland through LONITÉ. You can attend the farewell in person or entrust it to the specialised Swiss team.

LONITÉ coordinates:

  • The memorial-diamond order

  • Identification and handling of the ashes

  • Communication with the natural-burial partner

  • Package and ceremony choices

  • A personalised proposal

  • Documentation after the farewell

Travel, accommodation and local transfers may also be added when family members attend. International transport requirements differ by origin and carrier, so customers should contact LONITÉ before shipping or travelling with cremation ashes.

Can international families arrange a natural burial in Switzerland?

Yes. A LONITÉ natural-burial ceremony can be personalised with music, flowers, a celebrant and other meaningful elements.

Available additions may include:

  • A funeral speaker or religious representative

  • Live or recorded music

  • Floral arrangements

  • Personal readings and family tributes

  • Photography, video or live streaming

  • Religious and cultural rituals

  • Transportation and accommodation

  • A family lunch or dinner

The ceremony may be simple and private or more fully arranged. Because each family’s wishes and selected location are different, these elements are included in an individual proposal rather than offered as a fixed standard package.

Can the ceremony include music, flowers or a celebrant?

Yes. LONITÉ can coordinate a Swiss natural burial even when you do not purchase a memorial diamond. Families may choose an attended or unattended farewell and customise the natural setting, ceremony and documentation.

However, the featured offers on this page are designed primarily as complete memorial packages. They combine:

  • A LONITÉ memorial diamond made from part of the ashes

  • A natural burial for the remaining ashes

  • Coordinated support from LONITÉ and its Swiss partner

For a standalone ashes-scattering or natural-burial service, contact LONITÉ for availability and a personalised quotation.

Can we book a Swiss natural burial without a memorial diamond?

The remaining ashes are connected to the customer’s order through LONITÉ’s identification and tracking procedures before any transfer is arranged. Each accepted memorial-diamond order receives an order ID used for tracking and identification.

The process generally includes:

  1. Confirming the family’s written instructions

  2. Recording the order and recipient details

  3. Keeping the material securely stored during production

  4. Coordinating the handover with the Swiss natural-burial partner

  5. Confirming the selected package, location and ceremony date

LONITÉ’s order procedure uses identified submission materials and documented handling to protect the integrity of every order.

How are the remaining ashes identified and transferred?

The farewell will be postponed, relocated or adjusted when weather conditions make the planned ceremony unsafe or unsuitable. This is especially important for mountain meadows, glaciers, waterways, balloon ceremonies and other exposed Alpine settings.

LONITÉ and its Swiss partner will:

  • Review the forecast before the ceremony

  • Explain weather-related limitations

  • Discuss an alternative date or suitable location

  • Update attending family members

  • Protect the dignity and safety of the farewell

Any rescheduling terms, travel implications or additional costs should be stated in the personalised quotation before the service is confirmed.
