That was the beginning. What followed has been ten years of science, craftsmanship, and thousands of families who placed their trust in LONITÉ during one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

Where It All Started

In July 2016, LONITÉ was founded in Switzerland with a clear purpose: to create memorial diamonds from ashes or hair, and bring that answer to life. 

The technology of transforming carbon into diamonds under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) had existed for over 50 years. But LONITÉ believed this science could be paired with real heartfelt care, combining Swiss precision with emotional sensitivity. This was never just about producing a gemstone, but about understanding that every set of ashes, every lock of hair, carried a lifetime of memories.

The first diamond took months to grow. Somewhere in a small laboratory in Horgen, carbon that had once been part of someone's life slowly metamorphosed into a precious gem. There was no way to rush it, and no way to know exactly what would emerge. When it finally did, rough and unpolished, it was proof that the idea LONITÉ had built itself on was more than theory. Grief could become a beautiful, timeless keepsake.

The Milestones That Shaped a Decade

Here is how LONITÉ has evolved through that decade:

2017: The First Diamond. After months of careful work in the Horgen laboratory, LONITÉ created its first memorial diamond, turning the idea on which the company was founded into reality.

2018 to 2021: From Switzerland to the World. In its first years, LONITÉ grew from a single laboratory in Horgen into a name recognized for Swiss memorial diamonds, serving families across the UK, Germany, the United States, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Each new market brought new stories and a deeper understanding of how grief and remembrance are felt across cultures.

2022 to 2023: A Seat at the Table. LONITÉ became a partner of the Swiss Association of Funeral Services (SVB), strengthening its ties to the industry it calls home.

2024: Solidifying the Foundation. The year marked two major investments in infrastructure. LONITÉ opened its EU logistics and German office in Berlin, bringing the company closer to families across mainland Europe. At the same time, the laboratory in Horgen underwent a significant expansion, increasing capacity to meet growing global demand while holding every stage to the same exacting standard. Toward the end of the year, LONITÉ also joined FIAT-IFTA, the international federation of funeral associations, extending its reach and credibility worldwide.

2025: Opening the Doors. For the first time, LONITÉ began welcoming families to visit the Horgen laboratory in person. These visits gave clients the chance to see exactly where and how their memorial diamonds are created, adding a layer of transparency to a process most only imagine. For many, walking through the lab where their loved one's ashes would be handled brought a sense of comfort and connection that no brochure or website could replicate.

Since 2025, clients have been able to see the process firsthand.

2026: A Year of Firsts. LONITÉ's 10th anniversary year has been one of the busiest yet. The company opened its Japan headquarters, bringing dedicated customer service and logistics to one of its most important markets, and a second office in Madrid now serves Spain and the broader South West Europe region. Later this year, LONITÉ will launch its first memorial diamond watch collection. The company has also introduced services for the ashes not used in the diamond creation process, including scattering options and other commemoration paths, giving families more than one way to say goodbye.

More Than a Diamond

Over the past decade, LONITÉ has served approximately 2,000 families worldwide. But numbers only tell part of the story. The heart of LONITÉ's decade is found in the families who chose to transform their grief into a legacy they could keep.

One story that the LONITÉ team cherishes especially involves a family in France who tragically lost their son. They chose to create a red memorial diamond from his ashes. When it comes to color, every diamond is unique, and the exact hue cannot always be predicted. Their diamond came out red with a soft pinkish tone. Rather than being disappointed, the family was brought to tears. Their son had been born in Paris, on Rue Des Roses, the Street of the Roses. The pink in the diamond felt like a sign from him, as if he had left them one last rose.

The Craft Behind the Promise

How memorial diamonds are made inside the LONITÉ laboratory is equal parts hard science and art.

It begins with the careful receipt of cremation ashes or hair, each sample documented and handled with the same reverence a family would give it at home. From there, LONITÉ's team of scientists isolates the carbon content through a careful purification process. That carbon is then placed into a growth cell and subjected to extreme pressure and temperature, replicating the conditions found roughly 150 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface, where natural diamonds form over millions of years.

That precision extends beyond pressure and heat. Purification reaches 99.99% purity, a standard known as 4N. The diamond seed comes from the top 0.1% of natural gem-quality stones. Pressures exceeding 60,000 bar at nearly 3,000 Kelvin produce Type IIb diamonds, a classification shared by only 0.1% of diamonds mined from the earth.

Start to finish, this creation process takes nine to twelve months, depending on the desired size and color of the diamond. What emerges is optically, physically, and chemically identical to a diamond mined from the Earth, but it carries what no mined diamond ever could: the carbon of a life a family loved and lost.

Once the rough diamond is formed, LONITÉ's gemologists cut and polish it according to the family's chosen specifications. Each diamond comes in one of seven distinct colors: Naturally Amber™, Greenish Yellow, Red, Black, Pink, Blue, and Purely Colorless™, influenced by the trace elements present in the ashes. Families can have their diamond certified by internationally recognized gemological institutes, including the International Gemological Institute (IGI).
